Read with Me! Book 6 - Listen to the Rain

Listen to the Rain by Bill Martin Jr. and John Archambault

Tonight was the perfect night to read this book! It was pouring! I don't know if you can see it, but it really is raining outside. This story goes through the process of a rain storm, from the first drips to the pounding rain finally ending at the silence that occurs after the rain. This is a good story to really use variations in your voice and volume, from quite whispers at first to deep, loud powerful words to slow, soft sound.

We enjoyed this book. It has great adjectives like "slow soft sprinkle," "first wet whisper," "roaring pouring rain" and "mushy muddy puddle."

The illustrations really help to put concrete pictures to the more abstract words (or when it hasn't rained like this in a while). You can use the pictures to help your child understand words like "topsy-turvy" and "pitter-patter."

If you are lucky like we were you can sit and watch the rain. Encourage your child to describe the rain using the words that are in the story or their own descriptions. We had lots of opportunities to say "lightening flashing" and "thunder crashing!"

Finally, we enjoyed singing a song. Now, I have no idea where this song came from. It could be a mixture of multiple made up songs (we make up lots of songs about all sorts of things)! So, if this is your song, please let me know and I'll give proper credit! Here it is:

I Hear Thunder (to the tune of Frere Jacques)

I hear thunder, I hear thunder
Hear it roar! Hear it roar!
Pitter patter rain drops
Pitter patter rain drops.
Watch it rain. Watch it rain.

Some extras:
There is also a song by Lauri Berkner called "Thunderstorm." Our favorite part is the "crack, crack, bam, bam, crashity crash" part! Look it up - it's great!

We hope that you enjoy Listen to the Rain! Do you have any favorite rainy day activities?
